Easy trip to Evora

08 Juli 2010 | Portugal, Évora
The first part was more hilly than I expected. It was an old mine area. Here I passed a field with very old olive trees (see photo). In Viana do Alentejo I stopped for a cup of coffee and some food shopping. After this village the scenery became the same as yesterday. Large fields with grain (most already harvested, so in fact straw), here and there changed for olive trees or fields with cattle. But all the way more or less flat, no big hills. So not much variation in the scenery.
What is characteristic in this area (and in the south of Portugal in general) is that there are a great lot of ‘ooievaars’ (sorry I don’t know the English name for these birds; see photo of yesterday).
Halfway the trip I passed by a little village in which the fountain was decorated with tiles. Each side showed a profession of the local people; the one on the picture are men who are cutting the skin of cork trees (which I have been seen Tuesday a lot).
At lunchtime I already arrived at the campsite in Evora, so an early finish today. But I liked it because I had time now to swim, lay down in the sun (for half an hour, because it was quite hot now), and just take it easy for the rest of the day. Tomorrow I planned to go sightseeing in Evora, so that I can go on further north on Saturday.
All together it was a relaxed day, which was welcome after two days that took much more energy.

Ian & Moira:
Hi Kees - Thanks for the translated diary of your day today. We can feel the heat of your photos. I loved the pictures earlier of the Atlantic Ocean and the rocks in it. Keep byking! -
